Dog Training Class Descriptions

Puppy Pre-School- $150

This program is designed for puppies 12 weeks of age to 5 months. The ideal time to start training is before bad habits are formed, and when dogs are more receptive to learning new and different things. With the help of our socialization exercises, obstacle course, basic obedience exercises and training games, puppies learn to be friendly, well mannered members of your family. Preventive health advice and common puppy behaviors are also discussed during each session. Class size is limited, with all household members encouraged to attend classes for the 7 weeks of training. Puppy Pre-School is an investment that will surely be rewarded with years of companionship with your special pet. Classes currently being offered on Monday evenings through The Family Companion.

Family Companion Class– $150

This program is designed for the adolescent dog (5 months to 2-3 years of age). Although a portion of our classes are set aside for traditional obedience training, what makes our program unique is the way we apply these exercises to practical household use. With fun, innovative lessons, we teach you to make the most of our classes while your dog is at home with your family. Problem behaviors commonly encountered with dogs of this age are also addressed. We cover such exercises as how to get your dogs attention, the sit stay & the down stay, each week adding time & distance. We work a lot with coming when called. Polite leash walking is also covered, as the dogs learn to focus on their handlers in stead of the distractions in the environment. A greeting routine, to help prevent jumping on in coming guests, is also established. We teach the “wait” for better control around doorways, stairs and while crossing the street. It is the ideal class for establishing good manners and building a positive relationship with the family pet. The program runs a total of 7 one hour classes. Although the class size is limited, there is no limit on the amount of household members that attend. This class is currently being offered through The Family Companion.

Graduate Family Companion Class (Canine Good Citizen Prep Course) – $150

Class exercises will focus on accepting a friendly stranger, sitting politely for petting, appearance & grooming, walking on a loose lead, walking through a crowd, sit, down & stay, coming when called, reaction to another dog, reaction to distraction, and supervised isolation. A CGC certification is a prerequisite prior to enrolling in the Pet Therapy Prep class. This program is 7 weeks in length, approximately one hour each week. Canine Good Citizen

6 week course

The CGC Program is designed to reward dogs who have good manners at home and in the community. The Canine Good Citizen Program is a two-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs who pass the 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club.

AKC Community Canine - $150

6 week course

AKC Community Canine is the advanced level of AKC's Canine Good Citizen (CGC) program. As with CGC, AKC Community Canine has a 10-step test of skills that dogs must pass to earn the official AKC Community Canine title. This is a title that appears on the dog's title record at AKC.

While Canine Good Citizen tests are simulations of real world skills, (e.g., dog/handler walks through a "crowd" of evaluators in a ring), the goal of AKC Community Canine is to test the dog's skills in a natural setting. For example, rather than the dog being tested in a ring, in AKC Community Canine, the "walks through a crowd" test item will involve the dog walking through a real crowd at a dog show, on a busy sidewalk, in a therapy dog setting, or at a training club. We will be practicing and improving your skills, whatever level you are at to achieve these goals.
